Concerned about the damage that global issues such as climate change and pollution might have on my beach I am visiting scientists and experts around the world to find out more about these conservation issues. During my travels I have also encountered some amazing wildlife and also met people helping the ocean. I share my experiences through this blog and by visiting schools. major missions for Ed the Bear was to find out how climate change might affect
his special beach and the rare plants at Shoreham. Warming seas causing thermal
expansion and melting polar ice both lead to sea level rises. At high tide,
this means there is a higher volume of sea water in the harbour and river estuary.
With increased rainfall flowing down to the sea, this adds even more water increasing
the river </span><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;">height</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> which can then flood the surrounding area.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzKmQ9UiuNA/YCBgCjEQhmI/AAAAAAAAKGk/vAYkQdMDTHM-jpl280hBW35_16B0a7xzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1504/river.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1126" data-original-width="1504" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzKmQ9UiuNA/YCBgCjEQhmI/AAAAAAAAKGk/vAYkQdMDTHM-jpl280hBW35_16B0a7xzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/river.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">As mentioned
in earlier posts, in September 2016 construction of an extensive river flood defence started
on the river Adur called the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme. This was in response
to this increase in flood events at Shoreham and the surrounding area including
a flood caused by a tidal surge and heavy rain in 2013. This was completed in March 2018 and will help protect at least 2,300 properties. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h1rf_MlUWbY/YCBbqi5agFI/AAAAAAAAKGY/rCqBb_daJt8YuVX6hhm02gNC2RjfdsQ8wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1064/Ed%2Band%2Bthe%2Bwall.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="685" data-original-width="1064" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h1rf_MlUWbY/YCBbqi5agFI/AAAAAAAAKGY/rCqBb_daJt8YuVX6hhm02gNC2RjfdsQ8wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Ed%2Band%2Bthe%2Bwall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;"><p class="MsoNormal">Flooding from the river is a major worry, this scheme cost £45 million, so this shows how important the flood protection scheme is.</p></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;">The pebble beach at Shoreham may still be in danger. Climate change is warming the ocean which may cause more powerful storms and in the future this may threaten the pebble beach home to the rare plants. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-shX3qSYsKVE/YCBgnvwCviI/AAAAAAAAKGs/mph4hcnFCXoMSKu_Kn_E_OuY_8XruQg0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s378/Picture1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="243" data-original-width="378" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-shX3qSYsKVE/YCBgnvwCviI/AAAAAAAAKGs/mph4hcnFCXoMSKu_Kn_E_OuY_8XruQg0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Picture1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;">So Ed the Bear's work continues. Ed is now sharing what he has learned during his travels, the amazing people and wildlife he has seen and also a warning of the conservation threats he has witnessed first hand.</span></p>Steve Savagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16774164494738837214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877648894584063851.post-85349789940057413742018-06-28T07:13:00.001-07:002021-02-07T13:46:02.212-08:00Big Bang Stem Science Event at Ardingly Show grounds<span style="font-size: large;">We are back again for our 6th year to share ocean science at this amazing event. This event has grown rapidly over the last few years from 2000 attending teachers and children to now almost 10,000.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D77q9cDnc_w/W2hPJHRKosI/AAAAAAAAJrY/AYh0G2WuOuopXGdetd4IcKWHUz99qla6ACEwYBhgL/s1600/009.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D77q9cDnc_w/W2hPJHRKosI/AAAAAAAAJrY/AYh0G2WuOuopXGdetd4IcKWHUz99qla6ACEwYBhgL/s400/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We exhibited our updated stand for 2018 this year including more updates about the offshore wind farm and the river flood defence at Shoreham on the River Adur. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tpkwr10zT1E/W2hPKFbBuZI/AAAAAAAAJrc/E-u3WDQoeJkx3pJjA-s6oE-pPLWGrd7kwCEwYBhgL/s1600/007.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tpkwr10zT1E/W2hPKFbBuZI/AAAAAAAAJrc/E-u3WDQoeJkx3pJjA-s6oE-pPLWGrd7kwCEwYBhgL/s400/007.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Back in 2009 when Ed the Bear first started visiting scientists around the world - sea level rise and the treat to the rare habitat at Shoreham Beach Nature Reserve were high priority. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6hXxNmTLZlQ/W2hO_2brr6I/AAAAAAAAJrQ/TTC2WlKJn8w5tNrOUc-guo__bhIna3L3ACEwYBhgL/s1600/003.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6hXxNmTLZlQ/W2hO_2brr6I/AAAAAAAAJrQ/TTC2WlKJn8w5tNrOUc-guo__bhIna3L3ACEwYBhgL/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Since then it has come full circle and a flood defence wall is now necessary to prevent flooding.</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We also included other main topics; plastic pollution was a major feature with two activities illustrating this. We also exhibited examples of plastic around the world from Ed the Bears on-going adventure. We also focused on climate change and also ocean acidification.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWDtDkuofzc/W2hPmWvylRI/AAAAAAAAJrs/gsnjLCsnVjE1TcwOoBvh4KzKntWQbxXWQCEwYBhgL/s1600/012.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aWDtDkuofzc/W2hPmWvylRI/AAAAAAAAJrs/gsnjLCsnVjE1TcwOoBvh4KzKntWQbxXWQCEwYBhgL/s400/012.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;">To bring the marine world alive we exhibited our popular tide pool display where live rock pool invertebrates were shown on a tv screen through a live link with tank cam</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y0b14F-oueg/W2hXM0B205I/AAAAAAAAJsU/ChaJvkETQJ8JW_n48dhVUN9AjBBF7n8KgCEwYBhgL/s1600/micros.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="817" height="375" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y0b14F-oueg/W2hXM0B205I/AAAAAAAAJsU/ChaJvkETQJ8JW_n48dhVUN9AjBBF7n8KgCEwYBhgL/s400/micros.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-image: none 100% / 1 / 0 stretch;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We also chatted to many interested children who also shared their views about ocean conservation issues and also discussed possible ocean science careers.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It was a fantastic event as even with lots of positive questions and feedback from very excited children.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-alDK-oGceYw/WzuUI2yHgDI/AAAAAAAAJqM/Mde464Rggec_1g0cxg5Vj_6R8bjwcgFrACLcBGAs/s1600/20180626_093844.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-alDK-oGceYw/WzuUI2yHgDI/AAAAAAAAJqM/Mde464Rggec_1g0cxg5Vj_6R8bjwcgFrACLcBGAs/s400/20180626_093844.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Jib is the Global Development Director and founder of care4baskets. CARE stands for Collect And Recycle Ecologically. They collect plastic waste from communities, schools and churches in Ghana. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2xiBUhJmtdM/WzuajpT76-I/AAAAAAAAJqg/BjQ_Ee8WIgcTWc7A6Wj-a3n5RNZh0WJ7gCEwYBhgL/s1600/baskets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1018" data-original-width="1600" height="253" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2xiBUhJmtdM/WzuajpT76-I/AAAAAAAAJqg/BjQ_Ee8WIgcTWc7A6Wj-a3n5RNZh0WJ7gCEwYBhgL/s400/baskets.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The plastic waste is woven into these beautiful baskets. Traditionally these baskets are made from straw but in northern parts of Ghana these grasses have become scarce due to climate change. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The baskets are woven to the same excellent quality of the original baskets. </span><br />

This is the project's 11th year and growing. </span><br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-724coJZeoJQ/WzereLfFbYI/AAAAAAAAJp8/QDGCsghPSe0KR4ZXHCE4M1Vp4hR4b6NfwCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180626_100123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-724coJZeoJQ/WzereLfFbYI/AAAAAAAAJp8/QDGCsghPSe0KR4ZXHCE4M1Vp4hR4b6NfwCEwYBhgL/s400/20180626_100123.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This year we set up our artificial beach to create a seashore strandline. <span style="font-size: large;">Children could explore the natural objects washed up on the beach and explore the clues that these objects provide us about life around our coast. </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_1XLl2Si0_0/WzerjyFaLNI/AAAAAAAAJp8/jd0ckkOkKO07y9sDyRCz0cnRNSBiKaedACEwYBhgL/s1600/20180626_133255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_1XLl2Si0_0/WzerjyFaLNI/AAAAAAAAJp8/jd0ckkOkKO07y9sDyRCz0cnRNSBiKaedACEwYBhgL/s400/20180626_133255.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">What does a cuttlefish look like? how does a dogfish grow inside its egg capsule, how do predatory dogfish eat mussels and much more was explored through a visual PowerPoint strandline quiz. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The children could also examine the man-made rubbish that washes up on the beach? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">Choosing an item they had to consider what the object was, how it might have found its way to the beach and how it might be dangerous to marine wildlife.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We also took along our exhibition stand including Shoreham Beach Local Nature Reserve, as well as the story of Ed the Bears travels, some of the fabulous places he has visited, amazing wildlife he has encountered but also some of the damage caused by humans.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It was an amazing day and we meet some great children full of enthusiasm and great questions and of course, dedication to help the environment.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">We found some fascinating rock pool life including goby fish and this camouflaged blenny</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qI_t17Wm-nc/Wy5beygSOrI/AAAAAAAAJoI/gFcWmor_RYA8obNJLRRD86bZ5u1HtH_zACEwYBhgL/s1600/20180620_164622.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1014" height="302" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qI_t17Wm-nc/Wy5beygSOrI/AAAAAAAAJoI/gFcWmor_RYA8obNJLRRD86bZ5u1HtH_zACEwYBhgL/s400/20180620_164622.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We also found this live oyster attached to a rock. The juvenile oyster settles on a rock and glues itself on and the shell grows out like a shelf.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CnVYnKqpz2A/Wy5duw0HlAI/AAAAAAAAJoc/vGBG-p3jsl8jCgmqnuYRu4Ew7NqPVsW4wCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180623_150421.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1061" data-original-width="1600" height="265" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CnVYnKqpz2A/Wy5duw0HlAI/AAAAAAAAJoc/vGBG-p3jsl8jCgmqnuYRu4Ew7NqPVsW4wCEwYBhgL/s400/20180623_150421.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">There were also lots of juvenile shore crabs. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-95t1_3gyr1U/Wy5dvM6KrCI/AAAAAAAAJoo/jLvBZduD00ELbAQRm_6XPLHtCGwVYQYxQCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180623_150509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1052" data-original-width="1600" height="262" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-95t1_3gyr1U/Wy5dvM6KrCI/AAAAAAAAJoo/jLvBZduD00ELbAQRm_6XPLHtCGwVYQYxQCEwYBhgL/s400/20180623_150509.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Their colour matches their surroundings when they are young, but when fully grow have their adult colours, green on top and orange underneath.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0d422EmEGw/Wy5cWmYzkKI/AAAAAAAAJoU/EZojAaNjaeUiJUz16lxg1Y_CH6ZiXkvrACEwYBhgL/s1600/20180621_100043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="680" data-original-width="1024" height="265" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0d422EmEGw/Wy5cWmYzkKI/AAAAAAAAJoU/EZojAaNjaeUiJUz16lxg1Y_CH6ZiXkvrACEwYBhgL/s400/20180621_100043.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">Afterwards, the children explored the shingle beach, learning about the rare vegetated shingle habitat, the seashore strandline and also learned about plastic pollution during a litter pick.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Well done to all the schools we worked with this week, you did some amazing work.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">All best, Ed the Bear.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wHPS4o2GJnM/WyeLoWej0DI/AAAAAAAAJmQ/kdjZfaeaLPYt7oQQb3yKMeeMEa1l-x9HgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wHPS4o2GJnM/WyeLoWej0DI/AAAAAAAAJmQ/kdjZfaeaLPYt7oQQb3yKMeeMEa1l-x9HgCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide1.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As you know Shoreham Beach has a rare habitat called vegetated shingle, which grown just above the high tide line. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMFSZqi-Zp0/WyeLoavQcGI/AAAAAAAAJmU/4OH64bRVS_keAHZx23nQX0FxDSnocpEygCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMFSZqi-Zp0/WyeLoavQcGI/AAAAAAAAJmU/4OH64bRVS_keAHZx23nQX0FxDSnocpEygCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">We were concerned about how global threats such as climate change and global warming might damage the shingle beach.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">To understand how this might happen we decided we needed to understand more about the global ocean and that's were my journey began.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I visited many scientists and experts to learn about the ocean, including NOAA who built me my amazing underwater dive bubble.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vt6Tz7kluHE/WyeL4-GToVI/AAAAAAAAJmg/leUIzW4BRSMUsho0vvUE853jtGf81EswwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vt6Tz7kluHE/WyeL4-GToVI/AAAAAAAAJmg/leUIzW4BRSMUsho0vvUE853jtGf81EswwCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide5.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L7ct05910-E/WyeL0puDrMI/AAAAAAAAJmc/FBJT8NwW3QcS9-JBMdnp343S7-Vz5IbnACEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide35.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L7ct05910-E/WyeL0puDrMI/AAAAAAAAJmc/FBJT8NwW3QcS9-JBMdnp343S7-Vz5IbnACEwYBhgL/s400/Slide35.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I learned how Shoreham Beach was threatened by sea level rise which could flood the rare plant habitat or create bigger storms that could wash the beach away.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I also discovered that sea level can cause flooding from rivers too. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TE1ht1zrBsk/WyeLoV4owFI/AAAAAAAAJmc/EdrFXDA1dTAisIP6QNrP3syuAd936tAkACEwYBhgL/s1600/river.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1126" data-original-width="1504" height="298" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TE1ht1zrBsk/WyeLoV4owFI/AAAAAAAAJmc/EdrFXDA1dTAisIP6QNrP3syuAd936tAkACEwYBhgL/s400/river.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The environment agency are currently building a new flood defence wall along the river which should protect the town, the airport and surrounding land for the next 100 years.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I have also encountered amazing wildlife on my travels to, from penguins in Antarctica to coral reefs of Florida and great white sharks off the coast of South Africa</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gg5nC9Whx_A/WyeOEuEmsEI/AAAAAAAAJmo/lHQenSxC8sM75mEyitlss5Tue7JMcaeBACEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gg5nC9Whx_A/WyeOEuEmsEI/AAAAAAAAJmo/lHQenSxC8sM75mEyitlss5Tue7JMcaeBACEwYBhgL/s400/Slide6.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">But sadly, the ocean system is struggling against human damage and on my travels I have sadly encountered this in many places from Sussex to Antarctica.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-90Fm2jZeC48/Wx585VDNnXI/AAAAAAAAJj0/ggqncI8mDU0Koe40kyOZmo43GVDvzF82wCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-90Fm2jZeC48/Wx585VDNnXI/AAAAAAAAJj0/ggqncI8mDU0Koe40kyOZmo43GVDvzF82wCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide6.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The</span> <span style="font-size: large;">planet is getting warmer which includes the oceans too. Warmer oceans are causing the polar ice to melt causing sea level rise. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G-bfdmghfFc/Wx5-d28h5zI/AAAAAAAAJk8/tzqDX88gEEA01HVqBXksSawyrT7j9aXzwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide32.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G-bfdmghfFc/Wx5-d28h5zI/AAAAAAAAJk8/tzqDX88gEEA01HVqBXksSawyrT7j9aXzwCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide32.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">However the oceans are getting rising because the oceans are getting warmer, because water expands when it is heated, and takes up more space in the ocean basins.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Warmer oceans are changing where some marine animals live. This is disrupting food chains and some animals are starving. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fwxh0JGJQA/Wx5-DiJIEdI/AAAAAAAAJk0/Rvzc79nrM781o7gAWhYvXhuat4p5tDpJgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide36.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fwxh0JGJQA/Wx5-DiJIEdI/AAAAAAAAJk0/Rvzc79nrM781o7gAWhYvXhuat4p5tDpJgCEwYBhgL/s320/Slide36.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sea birds that usually catch sand eels near to sure are having to fly further to catch food for their chicks and many are now not able to catch enough food to feed them.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Warmer seas, pollution ocean acidity are just some of the threats to coral reefs which are dying</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jVIq-1Jfyqo/Wx5-DsMVLdI/AAAAAAAAJks/e_gI6lzHll4pvbHSRnhCEEx4RwdPc1lFACEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide34.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jVIq-1Jfyqo/Wx5-DsMVLdI/AAAAAAAAJks/e_gI6lzHll4pvbHSRnhCEEx4RwdPc1lFACEwYBhgL/s400/Slide34.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Warmer seas mean more tropical storms. More moisture in the air will power stronger more powerful storms that can upset global weather patterns.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mNrfMcj92q0/Wx5-E5zGFkI/AAAAAAAAJkw/0yl6rEE0mOUSP3st0A7ysC0djfJQejEJACEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide38.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mNrfMcj92q0/Wx5-E5zGFkI/AAAAAAAAJkw/0yl6rEE0mOUSP3st0A7ysC0djfJQejEJACEwYBhgL/s400/Slide38.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Sea level rise and stronger storms means more coastal erosion. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2xiTqYhfFx8/Wx5-EeSMCGI/AAAAAAAAJk0/X-7xxHzRCAYDY1zOroQnkdpR9z9PF273wCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide37.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2xiTqYhfFx8/Wx5-EeSMCGI/AAAAAAAAJk0/X-7xxHzRCAYDY1zOroQnkdpR9z9PF273wCEwYBhgL/s400/Slide37.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">On my travels to the Hawaiian Islands I meet some dedicated people and learned a very important Hawaiian word Kuleana. This means Responsibility, but responsibility at a cultural level.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3uCGLlBnE/Wx6CDrATTtI/AAAAAAAAJlE/FTD6ypxA-Bgz1RPR6wKW7FN4kt8ePI8cwCLcBGAs/s1600/Slide49.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3uCGLlBnE/Wx6CDrATTtI/AAAAAAAAJlE/FTD6ypxA-Bgz1RPR6wKW7FN4kt8ePI8cwCLcBGAs/s400/Slide49.JPG" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The bad news is, we are all responsible as we contribute to the damage to the oceans through modern living. The good news is, that we are all responsible, which means we can also do something about it by making small changes to how we live.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Find out more in the final post coming soon</span>Steve Savagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16774164494738837214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877648894584063851.post-63821124280590091072018-06-08T09:02:00.001-07:002018-06-08T09:02:46.909-07:00Celebration World Oceans Day<span style="font-size: large;">Hi all</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I hope you have been out celebrating World Oceans Day. This is an event that not only celebrates the amazing biodiversity of marine life but also the many ways that we benefit from the ocean everyday.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We might think that the seas and oceans divide us, but actually we are all linked by the ocean.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_JLmnOPLaaA/WxqmR1O3VQI/AAAAAAAAJiA/_hlaNDiHbLQo3zPM7XdbCQiafz8uyo9pgCLcBGAs/s1600/ed2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1129" data-original-width="1504" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_JLmnOPLaaA/WxqmR1O3VQI/AAAAAAAAJiA/_hlaNDiHbLQo3zPM7XdbCQiafz8uyo9pgCLcBGAs/s400/ed2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Without the oceans, life on earth would be very different</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TwGVYy-Rg7g/WxqmR3D_8MI/AAAAAAAAJiQ/W3zdldlVHCM4jE_a-WzPqu51eoskGn9NgCEwYBhgL/s1600/ed1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1129" data-original-width="1504" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TwGVYy-Rg7g/WxqmR3D_8MI/AAAAAAAAJiQ/W3zdldlVHCM4jE_a-WzPqu51eoskGn9NgCEwYBhgL/s400/ed1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Plankton is a vital component of marine food webs. Even though we don't eat them directly, (although we have probably eaten fish that have), there are also other reasons why we need plankton.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HtP29Iet5fU/WxqmSrlEOVI/AAAAAAAAJic/jcMp7UC2jisqYYyPoQM3I1EmLxzAF1ypgCEwYBhgL/s1600/ed4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1125" data-original-width="1503" height="298" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HtP29Iet5fU/WxqmSrlEOVI/AAAAAAAAJic/jcMp7UC2jisqYYyPoQM3I1EmLxzAF1ypgCEwYBhgL/s400/ed4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We also rely on the ocean for freshwater and food.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--pC1uHv7mhY/WxqmSNI8rRI/AAAAAAAAJiY/18Cr_vkfkVAGkzC7fanXjZ3t8r-eiLsOwCEwYBhgL/s1600/ed3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1126" data-original-width="1504" height="298" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--pC1uHv7mhY/WxqmSNI8rRI/AAAAAAAAJiY/18Cr_vkfkVAGkzC7fanXjZ3t8r-eiLsOwCEwYBhgL/s400/ed3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Oceans are also a lot of fun providing us with essential wellbeing.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TTCIaTFI-yA/WxqmTUKaDDI/AAAAAAAAJig/Kdwutk_xklwiGV_hNb4PTds5B6D2YG6KQCEwYBhgL/s1600/ed5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1129" data-original-width="1500" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TTCIaTFI-yA/WxqmTUKaDDI/AAAAAAAAJig/Kdwutk_xklwiGV_hNb4PTds5B6D2YG6KQCEwYBhgL/s400/ed5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /><span style="color: white;"></span></span><br />
<span style="color: white; font-size: large;">I have just heard some amazing news. Wisdom, the Laysan Albatross, has returned to her Hawaiian nesting grounds.

<span style="font-size: large;">The Rampion Windfarm off the coast of the Shoreham Beach Local Nature Reserve is now well underway. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_42i5HV4bik/WalZhWo7nlI/AAAAAAAAJgc/yYrSzMzL86ca6PFO2WNfXxq2M6ErRORPACEwYBhgL/s1600/084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="691" data-original-width="1024" height="215" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_42i5HV4bik/WalZhWo7nlI/AAAAAAAAJgc/yYrSzMzL86ca6PFO2WNfXxq2M6ErRORPACEwYBhgL/s320/084.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-image: none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The wind farm is between 8 and 16 miles from the shore. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">There will be 116 turbines when its finished each standing 142 metres tall. The wind farm will generate enough power for 290,000 homes and replace 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Wind turbines harness the (free) and like early sailors wind farms use the naturally occurring winds that blow across the ocean.</span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xiqorZp7dvM/WalaHJp9bcI/AAAAAAAAJgk/EamAHJZJ_KcVI7wFhuOkk7MEPn-iHprrQCLcBGAs/s1600/115.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="681" data-original-width="1024" height="212" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xiqorZp7dvM/WalaHJp9bcI/AAAAAAAAJgk/EamAHJZJ_KcVI7wFhuOkk7MEPn-iHprrQCLcBGAs/s320/115.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><div class="separator" style="border-image: none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The windfarm will be completed by the end of 2018. Renewable energy sources like this are so important to help reduce man-made climate change and great to see this happening on our own doorstep.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KxM3pi_FJmE/WWSmFfrWVlI/AAAAAAAAJZs/avY4mXWQKs0Ejh-e5P1-HcYymqJ1fhoAQCEwYBhgL/s1600/049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KxM3pi_FJmE/WWSmFfrWVlI/AAAAAAAAJZs/avY4mXWQKs0Ejh-e5P1-HcYymqJ1fhoAQCEwYBhgL/s400/049.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The net had been rolled as it was washed ashore. I tried to pull it up the beach, but it appeared to be hooked on a rock or something as it was impossible to move.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FmSNXRP2D_M/WWSmFQpKRHI/AAAAAAAAJZo/cyfV8K0wnv41pVOcBqHP0-pLjNJtId1SACEwYBhgL/s1600/047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FmSNXRP2D_M/WWSmFQpKRHI/AAAAAAAAJZo/cyfV8K0wnv41pVOcBqHP0-pLjNJtId1SACEwYBhgL/s400/047.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I inspected the net and could find no marine life entangled, unlike the fishing net we discovered at the annual rock pool event (last year) I run at Shoreham Beach each year for Friends of Shoreham Beach. A large section of net was found on the beach which contained many crabs and some fish (which had died) The live crabs were cut from the net and released. <br />

consequences of rising sea levels is the main reason the Adur World Ocean Day
event did not take place this year. We often think of melting ice caps as being
the only cause of sea level side, but actually half of sea level rise so far
has been due to the oceans getting warmer – as water warms it expands and when
this happens on an ocean wide scale that’s a lot of extra water”.</span></span></div>

Earth Hour is a great way to raise awareness and focus on energy use and the threat of climate change. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0o0YqAKyKWg/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0o0YqAKyKWg?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">During the hour we turned off all lights and enjoyed the glow of numerous candles as well as turning off all other non-essential electrical appliances such as computers and TV. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For three years now, Ed the Bears UK base has used solar panels to provide much of the electricity to run the administration of the project in the UK - including the charging of mobile devices such laptops and cameras. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><em>Each year millions of people, businesses, and landmarks set aside an hour to host events, switch off their lights, and generally make noise to shine a light on the need for climate action.</em></span><br />
<em><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></em><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You can find out more about Earth Hour at <a href="https://www.earthhour.org/what-is-earth-hour">https://www.earthhour.org/what-is-earth-hour</a></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This week is British Science week and a great time to get involved in some citizen science. I have meet many penguins in travels, including jackass Penguins inn Africa and inn Antarctica I meet King penguins, Gentoo and chin strap penguins.</span><br />
<a href="http://adventuresofedthebear.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=penguins"><span style="font-size: large;">http://adventuresofedthebear.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=penguins</span></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Many penguins are in danger and scientists are studying the Antarctic penguin populations to find out why some species are declining.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So me and my buddy Steve, along with thousands of other people, are taking part in a citizen science project called Penguin Watch <a href="https://www.penguinwatch.org/?_ga=1.49036070.1475737459.1489150254">https://www.penguinwatch.org/?_ga=1.49036070.1475737459.1489150254</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0HH8sA0iwh8/WMKiPQc0YyI/AAAAAAAAJTA/Gtegk16bujQHX57rXZdbz1l8YLDc-WFrQCLcB/s1600/013%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0HH8sA0iwh8/WMKiPQc0YyI/AAAAAAAAJTA/Gtegk16bujQHX57rXZdbz1l8YLDc-WFrQCLcB/s400/013%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The scientists have thousands of photographs that have been taken remotely and they need help counting all the penguins in each picture.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWxoybyzua0/WMKjKReseyI/AAAAAAAAJTQ/mCqC5eKvyyAPsDxnnrsXec1Vd1kuuOUJACEw/s1600/wmplayer_2017-03-10_10-29-03%2B-%2BCopy.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWxoybyzua0/WMKjKReseyI/AAAAAAAAJTQ/mCqC5eKvyyAPsDxnnrsXec1Vd1kuuOUJACEw/s400/wmplayer_2017-03-10_10-29-03%2B-%2BCopy.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">For each picture you count the adult penguins, chicks, eggs and other wildlife present.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-41kTKtmoqUo/WMKiqBPLp5I/AAAAAAAAJTE/DiHILXISfww9i-8waB2cXruN2ZgiJ_mjQCEw/s1600/wmplayer_2017-03-10_12-08-23.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-41kTKtmoqUo/WMKiqBPLp5I/AAAAAAAAJTE/DiHILXISfww9i-8waB2cXruN2ZgiJ_mjQCEw/s400/wmplayer_2017-03-10_12-08-23.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">There is an easy introduction on the website to explain how to help. I hope you will have fun helping the scientists help the penguins.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Its time again for the Brighton Science Festival and along with friends of Shoreham Beach we set up our beach and ocean exhibit. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eaFpiWX1qxU/WKG7Z7a8fwI/AAAAAAAAJO4/BmmYScW37ZIGe8PyAfoj9qZeV0Xn0lOVgCEw/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eaFpiWX1qxU/WKG7Z7a8fwI/AAAAAAAAJO4/BmmYScW37ZIGe8PyAfoj9qZeV0Xn0lOVgCEw/s400/012.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Each year I get to share another of my adventures and also talk story about the many things I have learned and experienced during my global travels such as that 50% of the oxygen we breathe on land actually comes from phytoplankton in the ocean. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nzrr7IZi0w4/WKG7Z9qtQwI/AAAAAAAAJPk/a0s_8-Q8GmgsOK2aMKTbFo4Dpni6ZF7qgCEw/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nzrr7IZi0w4/WKG7Z9qtQwI/AAAAAAAAJPk/a0s_8-Q8GmgsOK2aMKTbFo4Dpni6ZF7qgCEw/s400/014.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The ocean also moderates our climate and weather, provides fresh water and 15% of global food. New medicines are being discovered in the ocean and the ocean is also a great pace for fun and wellbeing.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vIY71W6PbEk/WKG7amThbbI/AAAAAAAAJPk/6r34vKbUXxUNaDe_LRLFDvt-5SLqETeLACEw/s1600/021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vIY71W6PbEk/WKG7amThbbI/AAAAAAAAJPk/6r34vKbUXxUNaDe_LRLFDvt-5SLqETeLACEw/s400/021.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sadly, the ocean is being damaged by many human activities such as plastic, climate change which is warming the ocean threatening marine life and also causing flooding. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_CtukQo8Gsc/WKG7aQMNf1I/AAAAAAAAJPI/L6UBrk2Es9snJAikaoFyfQkTals4ls_IACEw/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="341" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_CtukQo8Gsc/WKG7aQMNf1I/AAAAAAAAJPI/L6UBrk2Es9snJAikaoFyfQkTals4ls_IACEw/s400/015.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Man made carbon dioxide is also changing the chemistry of the ocean causing ocean acidification.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Shoreham Beach and the River Adur are currently suffering the local consequences of global sea level rise from climate change as the sea and river defences are being raised. As the oceans warm - the water expands taking up more space and so sea levels rise. Melting glaciers is also a major reason why sea levels are rising.</span></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I have also encountered some amazing wildlife to. I have sat with penguins on the polar ice, come nose to nose with great white sharks, dived on coral reef and shipwrecks and much more. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ekZQc-wgSrY/WKG87fBMHkI/AAAAAAAAJPs/MgJtyTnPaJ8BYDGzBo1fkNO5Q7cD9MK3QCEw/s1600/Ed%2BMontage%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ekZQc-wgSrY/WKG87fBMHkI/AAAAAAAAJPs/MgJtyTnPaJ8BYDGzBo1fkNO5Q7cD9MK3QCEw/s400/Ed%2BMontage%2B3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I have also observed the amazing wildlife we have on our on beaches in the UK - including the amazing local nature reserve on Shoreham Beach.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In fact we ran two drop in workshops where we demonstrated some of the amazing animals that live in rock pools on Shoreham Beach.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">An amazing thing happened, you will never guess, the sea anemone actually gave birth to a tiny baby sea anemone on the day.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WG6c-vjZUFQ/WKG7a4aHKxI/AAAAAAAAJPk/Dba1Q2EKL2kwBK9p7U9x2cssOm8zJ5knACEw/s1600/025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WG6c-vjZUFQ/WKG7a4aHKxI/AAAAAAAAJPk/Dba1Q2EKL2kwBK9p7U9x2cssOm8zJ5knACEw/s400/025.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In between the drop in sessions we ran a video showing some of the places I had visited and animals I have encountered.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-edCI6Th5SAo/WKG7a7sATgI/AAAAAAAAJPk/iOp7ii9CnQA7QHfAF46QwluRMH4_cF18gCEw/s1600/022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-edCI6Th5SAo/WKG7a7sATgI/AAAAAAAAJPk/iOp7ii9CnQA7QHfAF46QwluRMH4_cF18gCEw/s400/022.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This included penguins in Antarctica and South Africa, great white sharks off South Africa, humpback whales and Laysan albatross in the Hawaiian Islands, coral fish, turtles and much more.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Vfdr2c5nERk/WKG7aJsIPRI/AAAAAAAAJPk/dcvtAYHX9x4Z5QtC6W26YTHKqcG--bWjACEw/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Vfdr2c5nERk/WKG7aJsIPRI/AAAAAAAAJPk/dcvtAYHX9x4Z5QtC6W26YTHKqcG--bWjACEw/s400/018.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Friends of Shoreham Beach had an amazing exhibit about the rare shingle plants and the fascinating wildlife that lives on the beach. There was also a strandline quiz and a plastic pollution exhibit.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-jI4FKZ-6A/WKG7aeRTTzI/AAAAAAAAJPk/_KDkIGfDp-MNi77yD3DMULEZ4vBz0BsMQCEw/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-jI4FKZ-6A/WKG7aeRTTzI/AAAAAAAAJPk/_KDkIGfDp-MNi77yD3DMULEZ4vBz0BsMQCEw/s400/019.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">My sister Bella also shared her adventures - looking at why freshwater is so valuable - in nature and to wildlife as well as humans. </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1bQmxDvwAQQ/WKLhFOy7H4I/AAAAAAAAJRE/DRY_8NsPhCAbkqODWxItIDMSnzuLRI5ggCLcB/s1600/Bella%2BWOW.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1bQmxDvwAQQ/WKLhFOy7H4I/AAAAAAAAJRE/DRY_8NsPhCAbkqODWxItIDMSnzuLRI5ggCLcB/s400/Bella%2BWOW.png" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As you know Bella is based at the Lewes Railway land Nature Reserve where she explores how water is important not just to the animals that lives in freshwater but also to the many animals that visit freshwater to drink, bathe, catch food, or lay eggs.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Bella has made two trips to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru and see some amazing wildlife. But its hard to believe that there is a shortage of clean drinking water in the rainforest for humans and Bella visited a community where they had a new water filter to make the river water safe to drink. You can find out more about Bella the Bear at <a href="http://www.bellabearsworldofwater.com/" target="_blank">Bella Bear's World of Water.</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It was an amazing day with lots of questions from fascinated visitors.</span><br />

<br /><br />
Hope you all have a great Christmas. <br />
<br /><br />
Loads of extra packaging is generated this time of the year from all that lovely food and presents so please be careful and make sure you recycle everything that you can. Better still - try to chose items that have less packaging.<br />
<br /><br />
In this cold season its very comforting to stay indoors and bring in some of the outside. I cut down some branches from the garden and decorate it with berries and leaves. Unlike my American cousins - I stay awake all year round but in some parts of the world bears will already be asleep.<br />
<br /><br />
Its nice to brighten up our surroundings when things are looking bleak. While we have solar panels - these of course do not work at night - so I am trying out some solar powered Christmas lights for the garden - which will store the power during the day and will twinkle and flash after dark.<br />
<br /><br />

Hi all<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As you know I travelled to the Atlantic Ocean last year as part of the crew on the Moondancer as we sailed south along the eastern seaboard of the Atlantic Ocean. We saw some amazing wildlife and I experienced all sorts of sea and weather conditions and learned first hand where wind comes from, what makes waves, why sea mist forms and much more. You can see this and some of the amazing wildlife we encountered in my earlier blog entries Sept to December 2015.You can also see more at <a href="http://moondancersailing.com/ed-the-bear/">http://moondancersailing.com/ed-the-bear/</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I arrived back in the UK end of January in time to take part in the Brighton Science festival in February. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyway, I went along with Ed Wade Martins, Skipper of the Moondancer, to help him deliver his Key note speech for the Brighton & Hove Environmental Education Project schools conference at Cardinal Newman school. We talked about the sailing trip and about the issues of plastics in the oceans and the whole thing went down really well.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dz7Kog1QYGlxCEkp3bjOdOjjxl15pN_NgowhcqwZMXq5e3KnMfZQRhclyCr8KcVLbpqFDYrA5EuCe5f5lpLYQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
Here is a short video me made at the school. We have lots of great footage of the voyage which we are working on and will have more great stuff to show soon.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In January I will be returning to the Atlantic Ocean with the Moondancer and the rest of the crew for more adventures.<br />
<br />Steve Savagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16774164494738837214noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4877648894584063851.post-2284358600106145572016-09-26T23:00:00.000-07:002016-09-30T09:07:01.770-07:00Ed the Bear and One Ocean Project take apart in EYE Eco Summit<span style="font-size: large;">Great to be taking part again in the EYE Eco Summit (EYE = Eco Young Engaged). <a href="http://www.eyeproject.co.uk/about-us">http://www.eyeproject.co.uk/about-us</a> Following the 9th annual Worthing & Adur Eco Summit this is the first event for schools in the west of the county which was held at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.</span> <br />
<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KHCsJDO4UdA/V-6JSotlBBI/AAAAAAAAJJc/aq_oI-ZQfcgw0txVDRv_Fistj9NtxxZUgCEw/s1600/One%2BOcean%2Bdisplay%2Bstand.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KHCsJDO4UdA/V-6JSotlBBI/AAAAAAAAJJc/aq_oI-ZQfcgw0txVDRv_Fistj9NtxxZUgCEw/s400/One%2BOcean%2Bdisplay%2Bstand.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">During the day, participating schools took part in a variety of workshops including Living Wage Game, Importance of pollinators, energy misuse and saving energy, importance of water conservation and others. the participating schools could chose 3 workshops to take part in - including our workshop One Ocean - focusing on the benefits we get from the ocean and ways that we are impacting our climate.<br />
<br /><br />
Using a presentation of Ed the Bear and the One Ocean Project I introduced the pupils to the concepts around benefits we receive from the ocean using examples from Ed the Bears travels. Then used examples from Ed's travels to consider ways we impact our climate - this included a Q&A.<br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TfINo6Hl96U/V-6JSoDXpfI/AAAAAAAAJJ8/dFypE2Zw838OmPO2cgQiCL6FS4s-uabIACEw/s1600/Creating%2Bthe%2Binfographics.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TfINo6Hl96U/V-6JSoDXpfI/AAAAAAAAJJ8/dFypE2Zw838OmPO2cgQiCL6FS4s-uabIACEw/s400/Creating%2Bthe%2Binfographics.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">
We then used this as a start point for the pupils to create an infographic, group 1 focused on the benefits and group 2 ways that we impact our climate<br />

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Friends of Shoreham Beach take part each year in the Marine Conservation Society - Great British Beach Clean <a href="http://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/greatbritishbeachclean">http://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/greatbritishbeachclean</a></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">This year the local event was on 18th September, and organised by John Charlish committee member Friends of Shoreham Beach. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wo6tBIEeJZQ/V9_y81trtoI/AAAAAAAAJHo/2bFISCwy31wm7JUsys9lWxIlbj3SjUHVACEw/s1600/005%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wo6tBIEeJZQ/V9_y81trtoI/AAAAAAAAJHo/2bFISCwy31wm7JUsys9lWxIlbj3SjUHVACEw/s400/005%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Also this year I was able to come along with Ed the Bear to help with the planned beach clean and to provide a deeper awareness and understanding of the global and local problems caused by plastic. The event base was set up alongside the recently constructed boardwalk (which is actually made from recycled plastic)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDD-qvrsfGQ/V9_y8nwPUgI/AAAAAAAAJHk/gFmyEYJ3PbMRiU9v7_GaJWPDhvoosIG_QCEw/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDD-qvrsfGQ/V9_y8nwPUgI/AAAAAAAAJHk/gFmyEYJ3PbMRiU9v7_GaJWPDhvoosIG_QCEw/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">This included my display stand focusing on why Shoreham Beach (where the event was taking place) was important and how we benefit from the ocean (ecosystem services) such as 50% of our oxygen, freshwater, 15% of food as well as how the ocean moderates our climate and weather. The display stand also provided a focus on local consequences to global issues – such as climate change and sea level rise. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4inQVJNwghM/V9_y9Z2eIII/AAAAAAAAJHw/SLSwUIMd770yCkga931GuvyYVmUfhemAACEw/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4inQVJNwghM/V9_y9Z2eIII/AAAAAAAAJHw/SLSwUIMd770yCkga931GuvyYVmUfhemAACEw/s400/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">The display stand also included pictures and information from the One World One Ocean Project and Ed the Bear.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">As you know I have been send Ed the Bear to scientists around the world to find our about the ocean and ocean conservation which we then share at events and visiting schools using to create links between the local and global, a celebration of the ocean which includes a focus on conservation issues explored first hand. <a href="http://seawatch17.wixsite.com/one-world-one-ocean">http://seawatch17.wixsite.com/one-world-one-ocean</a> </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;"></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R32FIaTZFnU/V9_y9saZqqI/AAAAAAAAJIA/5TEM40HiUsEj0WIKcEvrqDhsOMWK-RrVwCEw/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R32FIaTZFnU/V9_y9saZqqI/AAAAAAAAJIA/5TEM40HiUsEj0WIKcEvrqDhsOMWK-RrVwCEw/s400/014.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">This also included local and global examples of plastic debris (including plastic strapping which came from cape fur seals that were entangled in the plastic, plastic incidents around the world including the necklace gifted to Ed the Bear while in Hawaiian islands – made from a numbered scientific leg band from an albatross chick that died from swallowing plastic. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Ed raises awareness of the plight of these majestic birds and also about the dangers to UK sea birds such as fulmar. There was also a big focus on micro plastics – from how large plastics items degrade into spammer items (which can be ingested) and also micro beads and other human sources.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--6CU9VQOm3k/V9_y9g6FRcI/AAAAAAAAJH8/hcToVqj3C9M5Dk0iKRswX5HX6yPRZebnQCEw/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--6CU9VQOm3k/V9_y9g6FRcI/AAAAAAAAJH8/hcToVqj3C9M5Dk0iKRswX5HX6yPRZebnQCEw/s400/012.JPG" width="388" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Part of the display also focused on the fact that not everything you find on the beach is rubbish – focusing on ray, dogfish, whelk and similar egg cases that look like they are plastic.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">I spoke to the participants about plastic pollution as they gathered awaiting the start of the beach clean. This included explaining about micro plastics and how the smaller items on the beach are often more dangerous to local marine life. </span><br />
